Writing a research paper begins with an essential question. Students must do research to discover what is known about the question. This research is then shared with teammates. Ideas are developed and shared during discussion. Students then write their first draft of their research papers. These drafts are shared and discussed with teammates. Final drafts are then written.
This process has several benefits over writing individual research papers.
1. More research can be accomplished by teams than individuals. 2. Teams bring more personal experience to the discussion. 3. More and higher quality ideas are created by teams than individuals. 4. Students learn from reading and critiquing essays written by other students. 5. Cooperation and competition motivate students to higher levels of achievement. 6. Evaluating the work of other students helps recognize quality work. 7. The burden of teaching is no longer solely in the hands of the teacher because students are learning to become self-educators.
