STEM Design Challenges with Adam Randall and Tammy Creighton

Many teachers struggle with finding the proper way to implement important STEM activities in their own classroom. Writing a research paper begins with an essential question. Students must do research to discover what is known about the question. This research is then shared with teammates. Ideas are developed and shared during discussion. Students then write their first draft of their research papers. These drafts are shared and discussed with teammates. Final drafts are then written.

This process has several benefits over writing individual research papers.

1. More research can be accomplished by teams than individuals.
2. Teams bring more personal experience to the discussion.
3. More and higher quality ideas are created by teams than individuals.
4. Students learn from reading and critiquing essays written by other students.
5. Cooperation and competition motivate students to higher levels of achievement.
6. Evaluating the work of other students helps recognize quality work.
7. The burden of teaching is no longer solely in the hands of the teacher because students are learning to become self-educators.

The Internet is used for research. Word processing is used for note taking and references. Word processing is used for writing drafts and final essays. Presentation software can be used to enhance presentations. A learning management system is use correcting.

Bootstrap: Coding Videogames with Algebra with Ed Campos

Teach your students to code and reinforce their Algebra skills using this FREE Common Core aligned curriculum that runs on a Chromebook! Students write, compile, and troubleshoot their code with WeScheme, a cloud based programming environment. Your students will program their own video game using code and Algebra(order of operations, linear equations, piecewise functions, compound inequalities, and distance formula).

Bootstrap is a curricular module for students ages 12-16, which teaches algebraic and geometric concepts through computer programming. At the end of the module, students have a completed workbook filled with word problems, notes and math challenges, as well as a videogame of their own design, which they can share with friends and family. Unlike most programming classes, Bootstrap uses algebra as the vehicle for creating images and animations, and is designed from the ground up to be aligned with Common Core standards for algebra.
Bootstrap also builds in a pedagogical approach to solving Word Problems called the Design Recipe. Students solve word problems to make a rocket fly (linear equations), respond to keypresses (piecewise functions) or explode when it hits a meteor (distance formula). In fact, this same technique has been successfully used at the university level for decades.

Elementary Robots - What's Not to Like? with Terry Smith

We’ve been piloting and experimenting with 6 relatively inexpensive programmable robots in grades 1-5. Students participated in the selection process and we purchased a selection for use in classrooms. Free Sites for Paperless Classrooms with Ted Dunn

"There are not many free LMS (Learning Management Systems) out there and using these programs have helped me turn my classroom into a virtual paperless classroom. This session will cover 3 digital tools that will engage all students in collaborative lesson participation in K-12 classrooms. Participants will learn about three digital tools, Edmodo, Google Classroom, and Padlet. Most importantly there is no need for e-mail to run this program.

To start a class a teacher can utilize Edmodo to have the students (and parents) see the agenda and start a do now or warm up. Then they can use the site as a back-channel to get questions answered and get more information about the current subject from other students while the teacher is pushing out information. This will also be the main communication tool between students and teachers instead of using e-mail.

Google Classroom is a tool from GAFE (Google Apps for Education) your school has to already have it to utilize Google Classroom. The real advantage of this program is that it is a great tool to pass out and collect work that is assigned in the classroom. More importantly you can share your presentations almost instantly and push out a template of an assignment to all students in one place.

Padlet provides virtual space for teachers to collect and present students’ ideas. Using Padlet, teachers can quickly create and manage a collaborative digital forum where all students demonstrate their engagement through real time, written response.

Using the Schoology LMS for Teaching an Online English Arts Class with Kevin Cushing

During this session participants will learn how to design a sequential online or blended course for the English language arts. There will be an emphasis on the use of the Schoology LMS but aspects of course design are transferrable to any LMS platform. Course creation will focus on the creation of learning units or modules, use of introductory activities for each lesson, creating a collegial, interactive class environment, effective pacing, clear and effective assessments, and specific strategies related to formative assessment. Embedding audio, video, and outside links and resources will also be discussed with an emphasis on practical information that students will actually use.
